was misbranaed.
Analysis of a sample of the article by the Bureau of Chemistry -0f -tki-s -de-partment
s-h-ow-ed that it w-as ess~ntiaUy ~ mirtnre of sntp-h:nr, bMa:g:, tra-ee of
~tarch, plant ti-sBue carrymg ooroo·ine; iron, aluminium, and po-ta-ssiurn, as
sulphates and nitrates ; -charcoal and traees -of manga-ne~ dio:rld in-dica't-ed.
It was alleged in substance in the information that the article was misbranded
for the reason that C'e'l'W.in st-atemt>nt-s ai,peariag on its labels falsely &fld
fraudulently repreS'-enred it as a remedy for diphtheria and as a ctlre for sore
throat and croup, WB.-en, in truth il.nd in fa-et, it was not.
On February 24, 1917, the a-et-end.ant company -ent~red a p1ea of guilty to the
first count of the informati<m. chairging misl3ran1l'l:ing of the dipMh~ria ren1ed:r,
and the court imposed a fine of $100. The other eount.s of the informat10i1
charging misbranding c,1. thse seven othi21' articles were dismissed b:y the court
on motion of the United States attorney.
