18684. Misbranding of Anti-Rheumin, U. S. v. 6 Dozen Packages of Anti- 
Bb.enmin. Default decree of condemnation, forfeiture, and

Examination of a drug product, known as Anti-Rheumin, showed that the 
article contained acetpiiehetidih, a derivative of acetanilid, and that the label 
fa^led,ta,bear,a, statement,of the quantity or proportion of acetphenetidin con- 
ta&ed'an the ^ticleiriBxamination also showed that the labeling bore certain 
statemente ^presenting that' *the article possessed curative and therapeutic 
properties which It did riot pqssess.

condemnation of Six dozeri packages of Anti-Rheumin, remaining, in the original 
unbroken. packaig^s'at/iBuffalo, N. Y., consigned by the Volz Co., Erie, Pa., 
alleging: that th'e article1 had teen shipped from Erie,I Pa., on or about March 
11, 1931, and had been transported from the State of Pennsylvania into the 
State of New York,' and charging misbranding in violation of the food and

Arialysis of a sample of the article by this department showed that the cap- 
sules bohta'in'ed acetanilid, acetphenetidin, salicylic acid (1.5 grains per capsule), 
and; ground plant drugs including rhubarb.
It was alleged'"in the ilibel that the article was misbranded in that the 
packages failed to bear a statement on the label of the quantity or proportion 
of acetpherietidlri, an; acetanilid derivative, which was contained in the said 
article. 'Misbrandingwas alleged for the further reason that the following 
statements regarding the curative or therapeutic effects of the article, appearing 
in;the iabeling,/were''.!false arid fraudulent, since the article contained rib in- 
gredient or"coiribinatiori of ingredients capable of producing the effects claimed:

tifically coiripounded remedy especially made for the treatment of Rheumatism, 
Arthritis,' Sciatica,^ Lumbago and Gout. * * * How does Anti-Rheumin 
Work?1 This remedy;is intended to dissolve the deposits of Uric acid and 
Nitrogen m the1 organism, especially in the joints, and removes them from the

On "May 18, 1931, no claimant having appeared for the property, judgment of 
condemnation and forfeiture was entered, and it was ordered by the court that 
the product be destroyed by the United States marshal.
