27627. Adulteration of maple sirup. IT. S. v. 70 Drums of Maple Syrup. Decree ordering release of product under bond conditioned that it be de- leaded. (F. & D. No. 39885. Sample No. 21135-C.) This product contained lead in an amount which might have rendered it injurious to health. On July 21, 1937, the United States attorney for the District of Vermont acting upon a report by the Secretary of Agriculture, filed in the district court a libel praying seizure and condemnation of 70 drums of maple sirup at St Johns- bury, Vt, alleging that the article had been shipped in interstate commerce on or about May 11, 1937, by A. B. Brown from Cincinnatus, N. Y., and charging adul- teration in violation of the Food and Drugs Act The article was alleged to be adulterated in that it contained an added poisonous or deleterious ingredient, lead, which might have rendered it injurious to health. On October 4, 1937, Earl J. Rogers, Cabot, Vt, having appeared as claimant and having admitted the allegation of the libel, judgment was entered ordering that the product be released under bond, conditioned that it be deleaded under the supervision of this Department, in order to remove the deleterious ingredient.
